Kinderlee Mill

A project to convert of series of derelict water mills to residential accommodation in the peak district.

The intentions of the design were to preserve as much of the existing delicate building fabric as possible while introducing more modern contemporary features, clearly illustrating the distinction between new and the existing parts of the development.

The design intended to maximise building orientation to take advantage of passive solar gains and passive ventilation systems. During the design process a number of other sustainable design features were investigated including grey water recycling and integrated water source heat pump systems.

Problems were encountered due to restrictions set by the existing building fabric, complex existing site levels and access requirements.

These problems were overcome by careful planning and the introduction of high level walkways combined with wild flower planted gabion retaining walls linking the buildings and spaces together.
